PHRASES AND CLAUSE


PHRASE
CLAUSA
Phrase is a group of words that does not contain a subject and a verb. A phrase may consist of one word or more than one word, or phrase is a unit of grammar.
A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. Or clause is the main structures of which sentence are built. A sentence contain at least one main clause (independent clause), it may also contain subordinate clauses (dependent clause).

  1. A noun phrase:
e.g. : – I listen to his story.
- What his said was interesting.
- I heard his sroty.
  1. A noun clause:
e.g. : – I listen to what he said.
- Who lives there?
- Who is she?
  1. A verb phrase:
e.g. : – The door was opened.
- The cat has been eaten.
- The car has been washed.
  1. Adverbial clause
e.g. : – I am your friend until now.
  1. A prepositional phrase:
e.g. : – I invited her for a dinner.
- I called him at eight o’clock
- I put it on the table.
  1. Comment clause:
e.g. : As you know, I’ve finished this duty.
  1. An Adjective phrase:
e.g. : – It is too full for me.
- It is too easy to solve.
- It is impossible for him.
  1. Relative clause:
e.g. : the girls who is eating ice cream is my sister
  1. An adverb phrase:
e.g. : – He comes here quite often.
- He runs as quickly as possible.
  1. Comparative clause:
e.g. : Elin as cleaver as Zakia.
